Joe
In 1988, the Tamburitza Association of America presented Joe with its first Founders Award, given to a young person who demonstrates an outstanding devotion to the preservation of “tambura music and Slavic culture.”

Ryan Werner (cello) from Milwaukee, WI. ,at a young age has become very respected for the quick virtuosity and strength that is evident in his playing.

Ryan learned to play in the Milwaukee CFU Tamburitzans, a junior tamburitza ensemble, as is where many young musicians gain their first exposure. Youth orchestras of this type are located in other major cities throughout the United States and allow young children to be exposed to Croatian music, dance, and culture.

Joe Kirin (brac) and Steve Kirin (brac),

joebiostevekbio

Croatian-American cousins born in Chicago, are third-generation tamburitza musicians. Their maternal grandfather, Roman Kauzlarich, led the Croatia-based Jadran Orchestra that played at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago.

Their fathers, Steve Kirin, Sr. and Joe Kirin, Sr., founded the renowned Sloboda Orchestra, and both Joe and Steve performed at an early age as dancers and musicians in the orchestra’s junior groups.

Steve Ovanin (bass) and Danny Ovanin (kontra),

stevebiodannybio

born in Los Angeles, have been playing and promoting Tambura since childhood when they both joined the St. Anthony’s Tamburitza and Kolo group of Los Angeles. During their youth, they both began to learn and excel on the Tambura. Steve also learned to play the accordion.

Both of Croatian decent, Danny & Steve are the sons of Marge and the late Ivica Ovanin- who was also a Tamburash as well as a master tambura builder, who instilled their Slavic culture, language, and most notably, music. Once Danny & Steve had reached their teenage years, they began to play and study with the Yeseta Brothers Orchestra of Los Angeles and other popular bands at the TAA extravaganzas.

In 1994, Steve had moved to Chicago, Illinois and began playing with the well known Orkestar Boduli of Chicago. Steve also assisted Joe and Renee Kirin with the direction of the Sloboda Junior Tamburitzans of Chicago.

After many years in Chicago, Danny & Steve quickly became well known for their musical expertise and filled in with other local bands including Slanina, Sinovi, Vatra of Milwaukee, and 8601 of Chicago. Danny and Steve also have many Tambura recordings and arrangements on their resumes. These recordings include Boduli, Vatra, Slanina, 8601, Robi Sestili, and most notably they have recorded with Momcilo Nikolic, formerly a member of RTV Novi Sad & the Janika Balaz Orchestra.

Together this group of musicians, seasoned by years of experience and training, are carrying on the musical legacy of their forefathers and have grown to become some of the most notable Tamburasi in the United States and Canada. Their skills as musicians and their love for their culture serve as an example for all.
